August 8 and 9 Guided tours of the fortress and tower in Aledo
Some of the best views of the area are from the 1000-year-old castle of Aledo!
The small hilltop town of Aledo, which stands on an outcrop far above Totana in the mountains of Sierra Espuña, is a popular visiting destination for those spending time in the Region of Murcia, primarily because of the fortified keep which look out over the Guadalentín valley and, on a clear day, beyond towards the coastline of Mazarrón.
For most of the year, though, it is possible only to stand at the foot of the tower, to take snapshots of the views and, if you’re lucky, to take a look inside the lovely church just a few metres away. However, on 8th and 9th August there are opportunities to actually go inside the keep and climb to the top, experiencing the sight which those guarding the area oversaw as long ago as the 10th century.
The visits, titled “El Asedio de Aledo” (The Siege of Aledo), begin at 12.30 and include a brief explanation of the history of the town and the fortification (in Spanish), with registration priced at just 2.50 per head (free for children under 8): for further details and bookings please contact the local tourist office on 968 484422!
