Families of Adamuz rail crash victims begin receiving compensation payments
More than 130 claims have now been approved as support process continues for those affected by the Córdoba tragedy
More than 130 compensation claims linked to the deadly Adamuz train crash in Córdoba have now been approved, with some families and injured passengers already beginning to receive payments following the January disaster that shocked Spain. The Adamuz crash in January claimed dozens of lives and left hundreds injured after two trains collided in Córdoba province.Official figures show that 136 applications for financial support have so far been accepted since the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility opened the process on Monday February 3. Of those, 18 payments have already been made, while a further 118 claims have provisional approval and are now awaiting the end of the appeals period before the money is released.
The majority of the pending claims relate to families who lost loved ones in the crash. According to the latest data, 72 applications correspond to relatives of those killed and 46 relate to injured victims.
The aid forms part of an emergency support package introduced by the Spanish government after the tragedy.
The support is intended to provide immediate, non-refundable financial help to passengers, railway staff and relatives affected by the accident, while longer civil liability procedures continue separately.
The Ministry explained that the payments are compatible with other compensation routes, including Compulsory Passenger Insurance and any future settlements or insurance claims.
Applications were originally due to close on Sunday May 4, but the deadline has since been extended until Thursday June 4 in some circumstances. The extension applies to injured victims and indirect victims linked to deceased passengers where no previous application had been submitted on behalf of that person.
Anyone who has already applied does not need to take further action.
The latest update comes as scrutiny surrounding the Adamuz disaster continues to grow. Earlier investigations raised concerns over alleged rail defects and missing maintenance records linked to the line involved in the crash.
At the same time, victims’ groups and relatives have continued demanding answers over what happened. Families had previously announced plans for protests in Madrid, claiming warning signs may have been missed before the collision.
Applications for the aid can still be submitted both online and in person through the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility website, which also provides guidance documents and frequently asked questions for affected families.
