La Puebla Potato Festival wins national prize!
The festival in the Cartagena countryside generally takes place in June or July
The annual Potato Festival in La Puebla, a small town in the countryside between Cartagena and the Mar Menor, has been awarded a prestige prize for being the Best Potato Promotional Event in Spain, and the prize is due to be handed over in Medina del Campo (province of Valladolid) on Thursday 22nd January.
The La Puebla Potato Festival is generally held in June or July and attracts large numbers of visitors, keen to try the fried, mashed and boiled potatoes as well as the inevitable Spanish omelette which are served during the weekend. It not only brings visitors to the town, but also brings together the locals in celebration of their specialist crop, and La Puebla was one of the founder members of the Potato Production Centres network across the country.
This year, as usual, everyone is invited to Potato Day, where there will be a special potato exhibition, potatoes on sale direct from the fields of the Campo de Cartagena, a competition to throw potatoes into the pot and of course various potato tasting sessions, which include omelettes as well as roast and boiled spuds.
So far the programme for the 2026 festival has not been finalized, but when it is the schedule will be published on Murcia Today – and will no doubt include the typical potato exhibition, presentations, the Potato Tapas Route at local bars and restaurants in La Puebla, El Algar, Pozo Estrecho, Los Camachos and La Aparecida, the potato cooking competition, direct sales to members of the public, the habitual arts and crafts market, tastings and, naturally, children’s and adults’ potato throwing competitions – because, well, why not?
