Marina de las Dunas Guardamar del Segura
The marina of Guardamar lies at the mouth of the River Segura
The marina of Guardamar del Segura is quite unusual for the Spanish Mediterranean coast in one way, namely that strictly speaking, it lies a short distance inland!
This is because the entrance to the marina for boats is not directly from the Mediterranean, but a hundred metres or so up the River Segura. A jetty protrudes eastwards protecting the mouth of the Segura, and to reach the 500 mooring points boats must enter the river before turning into the marina.
116 of the mooring points are reserved for use by the general public, and these are very popular among visitors, part due to the picturesque location. The smallest berths measure 7 metres by 2.5 metres, and the largest are double the length and width, all of them quality-certified according to ISO 9001:2008.
A dry dock provides repair and maintenance services for boats weighing up to six tons, and work on larger vessels can be contracted with prior notice. In addition, the marina offers a laundry service, re-fuelling, a stylish restaurant and bar and a beach bar, and a full range of water sports activities including sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing, scuba diving, kayaking and jet-ski.
Guardamar del Segura is also still a fishing port, andf special interest to many residents and visitors is the fresh fish market which is held on weekdays starting at 10.00 (except on days when meteorological conditions prevent fishing boats from sailing). This market doesn’t last long: make sure you get there early!
The range of services offered and the beautiful location of the Marina de las Dunas fully merit the Blue Flag for quality tourist services which it is awarded year after year, and one of the additional services worth mentioning is, perhaps surprisingly, the car park.
The marina lies just behind the Playa de los Viveros, one of the most attractive stretches of shoreline in the municipality of Guardamar, and there is no access to this part of the coast by motor vehicles. The closest one can get is the car park in the marina, which costs just three euros for a whole day (40 cents for those visiting the fish market and one euro for clients at the restaurant). This makes it an extremely attractive proposition to combine a day on the northernmost beach in the Vega Baja area of the Costa Blanca with lunch in the tranquil surroundings of the marina.
The office of the marina is open on weekdays from 8.00 to 15.00 and 16.00 to 19.00, and at weekends and on public holidays from 10.00 to 14.00, but closes all day on 1st January, 6th January and 25th December.
