Murcia steps up its green drive with 1,200 EV chargers and the region's first all-electric bus
The regional government boosts sustainable transport with more charging stations and a new electric Movibus service between La Unión and Cartagena
The Region of Murcia’s drive towards greener mobility continues to gather pace. Earlier this month, San Javier announced the installation of new ultra-fast charging points across the municipality as part of a broader initiative to encourage cleaner transport. Now, the region has gone even further, unveiling almost 1,200 electric vehicle charging points and the first fully electric bus connecting La Unión and Cartagena.More charging points, faster charging times
The Region of Murcia now counts 1,179 charging stations, making it the second single-province community in Spain with the largest network after Madrid. Environment Minister Juan María Vázquez said the expansion “supports the regional government’s goal of advancing the energy transition and decarbonising the transport sector.”
Eight new ultra-fast charging points have been installed at the Southeast Logistics Park, next to the A-30 motorway linking Murcia and Cartagena. These 150kW chargers can power a vehicle in under ten minutes and bring the total number of ultra-fast points in the region to 93.
A fully electric bus joins the fleet
The regional government has also rolled out the first fully electric Movibus on the route between La Unión and Cartagena, which serves more than 25,000 passengers each month. The 75-seat vehicle has a range of over 300 kilometres and is part of a €28.7 million investment in sustainable public transport co-funded by Next Generation EU.
Director General of Mobility and Transport José Antonio Verdú said the new service “improves the quality of public transport between two strategic municipalities and reinforces our commitment to cleaner, more efficient mobility.”
Together, Murcia’s expanding EV network and growing fleet of electric buses highlight a firm regional commitment to sustainable travel. With more investment already planned, the Region is positioning itself as one of southern Spain’s leaders in green mobility.
