Parking in or near the centre of Murcia: free car parks and paying underground facilities
Various options to avoid a time-consuming search for street parking
Parking the car in the city of Murcia can be an almost impossible task at times (with the exception of the month of August), but one option for those prepared to walk into the centre is a series of free “disuasorio” car parks, the name coming from the intention to dissuade drivers from entering the congested streets nearer the centre.
These are located mostly in the south of the city at the following locations:
- On Calle José Marín Serna, close to the “Ronda Sur” ring road: click for map.
- On the south side of the River Segura next to and below the A-30 motorway: click for map.
- On the north side of the River, next to the Malecón park and gardens: click for map.
For most tourists the most convenient of the three is the last listed. To reach it take the exit from the A-30 motorway at kilometre 142 and head towards the city centre along Calle Arocas. Keep in the right hand lane to avoid being syphoned off northwards along Avenida Juan de la Cierva, and at the second traffic light, which is at a roundabout opposite the Verónicas market, take the first exit on the right to almost double back on yourself along Calle Alcalde Gaspar de la Peña. The car park is on your left after a few hundred metres just before the road runs under the stretch of motorway which those approaching Murcia from the south have just left.
These parking areas not only provide virtual certainty that those arriving by car will be able to park (except on the days of the main local fiestas), and for free, but also offer a useful alternative to those with high-sided vehicles who find themselves unable to use underground car parks.
On the other hand, it is worth bearing in mind that the “disuasorio” car parks are generally frequented by “gorrillas” (nicknamed so not because of any reference to the large animal, but because they go cap in hand asking drivers for money – “gorra” is the Spanish for cap).
The unofficial self-proclaimed car park attendants are generally young immigrants unable to find work and ask drivers for a “tip” for their “services”. Unfortunately, the implicit deal is that if they are not “looking after” your car someone might scratch the paintwork, slash the tyres or cause other damage to it…
The local police have proved to be unable to prevent the “gorrillas” from operating at these car parks, and it is only fair to warn unsuspecting readers that they may feel more comfortable parting with a small “fee”!
Closer to the city centre there are also a number of underground paying car parks, including the following:
- Aparcamiento Santa Isabel, in Plaza de Santa Isabel next to the Gran Vía, the main street through the city centre: click for map.
- Parking Libertad in Avenida Libertad next to El Corte Ingles, click for map.
- Interparking Alfonso X in Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio, click for map.
- Aparcamientos La Fuensanta in Plaza de San Agustín, to the west of the Gran Vía, click for map.
- Parking La Vega in Calle Cronista Carlos Valcárcel, close to Plaza Circular, click for map.
- Aparcamiento Excelsior in Calle Simón García, close to the bull ring, click for map.
- Parking Murcia in Travesía Gutiérrez Mellado, between Plaza Circular and the university, click for map.
- Parking Saba at the railway station, click for map.
- Parking Murcia Centro in Plaza de Europa, click for map.
- The Glorieta de España next to the Town Hall and the river, very close to the Cathedral, click for map.
- Vibel in Calle de Acisclo Díaz, not far from El Corte Inglés and the Gran Vía, click for map.
- Parking Universidad in the Plaza de la Universidad, click for map.
- Aparcamiento Plano de San Francisco next to the Malecón gardens, click for map.
- Parking Campillo in Calle Acisclo Díaz, not far from El Corte Inglés and the Gran Vía, click for map.
- Aparcamiento Vistalegre in Avenida Marqués de los Vélez, near Plaza Circular, click for map.
- Europea in Plaza Santoña, south of the river, click for map.
- Parking Centrofama, click for map.
Apart from this, there is always a chance that visitors will be fortunate enough to find spaces in the street and be able to use a parking meter, but this is hard to guarantee except perhaps on Sundays.
