The Plaza Joaquín Costa is the main central plaza in La Unión, located in front of the former market place, the Antiguo Mercado Público which is the venue for many of the social and cultural events taking place in the municipality.
A stage is erected in the plaza during fiestas and this is the central point in which parades conclude, and public acts are scheduled.
The plaza is in front of the former public marketplace and plays a central role during the Cante de las Minas Flamenco Festival, when it is filled with booths selling a range of flamenco-related goods and services, and also acts as a “hall of fame “ for the flamenco greats who have performed there, each artist unveiling their name cut into the marble of the plaza itself after they perform.
There are several bars and commercial shops within the plaza, which also leads out into the main Calle Mayor shopping street of the town.
There is plenty of parking behind the plaza alongside the marketplace or across the railway lines by the railway station.
