Date Published: 03/12/2025ARCHIVED ARTICLE -Snow in Murcia: Northern mountains see first snowflakes of the season
Snow fell in the early hours of this Wednesday morning in the mountainous rural area of Moratalla
As forecast earlier this week, the Region of Murcia has seen its first snowfall of the season in the wee hours of this Wednesday morning, December 3, barely three weeks before the official start of winter.A dusting of snow fell to cover the highest altitude areas of northwestern Murcia, including such as the Macizo de Revolcadores mountainous areas and its surroundings, including the little villages of Inazares and Cañada de la Cruz in the municipality of Moratalla, close to the border between Murcia and Albacete. The white blanket is about two centimetres thick, although the wind and rising temperatures as the day progresses are blowing the snow away. The forecast for the rest of the week, mainly for the remainder of Wednesday and tomorrow, Thursday 4, is for more overcast skies and a chance of rain, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). For these two days, this precipitation forecast will translate into more snow in these same high-altitude areas. It will get colder, with minimum temperatures expected to be 8ºC and the maximum 18ºC in Cartagena; 3ºC minimum and 12ºC maximum in Caravaca de la Cruz; 6ºC minimum and 15ºC maximum in Lorca; 4ºC minimum and 12ºC maximum in Yecla; and 8ºC minimum and 16ºC maximum in the city of Murcia. In addition, strong gusts of wind are expected on Wednesday, which will persist throughout Thursday and Friday. In fact, the Aemet has issued a strong wind warning for Thursday afternoon, from 12pm until 10pm, for the possibility of windspeeds reaching up to 70kmh.
That said, the forecast looking ahead to the weekend is for bright and sunny skies, and temperatures which rise by a couple of degrees.>>> Follow our Murcia Weather Watch Facebook group for more weather updates or see our Weather & Climate page <<<
