Teatro Circo de Orihuela Atanasio Die Marin
A traditional theatre offering musical and cultural entertainment in Orihuela
The history of Orihuela’s Teatro Circo is somewhat unusual, as when it opened on 22nd May 1892 it wasn’t in fact in Orihuela at all, but in Alicante. It wasn’t until 1907 that the decision was taken to move it stone by stone to Orihuela, where it opened the following year on 25th April with an audience seating capacity of 2,000. It still remains in the same location, between the monuments of the old city centre and the River Segura.
The design of the building follows the French model, resembling an ancient circus, which is seldom found these days in the rest of Europe, and in 1929 it was modified to include a cinematographic projection facility. It is also worth noting that the lighting was originally installed by Isaac Peral, the inventor of the world’s first electrical submarine in Cartagena.
Unfortunately the theatre fell into disuse for many years, and was not restored in 1995, when it was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Sofía. Since then it has constantly been providing the people of the city and the surrounding area with top-quality productions, and all visitors will enjoy the lavish decorations both inside and outside the building.
Nowadays the total seating capacity is 981.
