The most Christmassy house in the Canary Islands lights up Valle de Guerra each December
Thousands flock to see the dazzling display that marks the start of Christmas
If you think the biggest Christmas light shows happen only in Paris or New York, think again… right in the Spanish village of Valle de Guerra in Tenerife is a house that lights up the festive season like nowhere else. As you drive along the winding El Boquerón road on a December night, the familiar banana plantations give way to a magical sight: a house covered head to toe in twinkling lights, enchanting locals and visitors alike for 30 years now.What started as a humble gesture by Lorenzo Barroso and his father, just a few lights on the façade, has since blossomed into a full-blown tradition that signals the start of the Christmas season for many neighbours. “Many place the beginning of Christmas exactly at the moment the switch is flipped at the house,” says locals who gather year after year.
Located at number 189 El Boquerón, the house dazzles with a sprawling arrangement of thousands of LED bulbs that wrap the roof, balconies, doors, and garden. Visitors can spot winter cottages, scarf-wearing dolls, reindeer, sleighs, a grand Santa Claus, and a host of other holiday favourites hidden throughout the display - perfect for kids to explore and adults to capture the perfect snap.
The lighting ceremony itself transforms the neighbourhood into a festive gathering, attracting over 2,000 people some years. Families arrive early, securing prime spots on the sidewalk to watch the show light up amid cheers and applause, accompanied by music and guest presenters. Nearby bars buzz with activity, making it a complete community celebration.
Behind the scenes, Lorenzo spends months preparing: designing new figures, checking cables, and programming sequences, all while supported by a close-knit circle of family and friends who help bring the spectacle to life. He shares sneak peeks on social media, building excitement and curiosity about what surprises this year’s display will hold.
Entry is free, as it always has been. For the Barroso family, Christmas is about shared joy and community spirit, making this house a beloved highlight on Tenerife’s holiday calendar and a must-see destination for those who cherish the season’s magic.
