Important lifeguard and safety information for Mazarron beaches this summer
Lifeguard and rescue stations, plus the importance of warning flags on Mazarrón beaches summer 2024
The summer season beach safety services officially started on June 1, with the opening of four Lifeguard and Rescue Stations on beaches:
La Playa de Bolnuevo (oasis area)
The lifeguard stations were initially only open on weekends, this year they have been manned on June 1, 2, 8 and 9 from 11.30 am to 7.30 pm. The season starts in earnest on Saturday, June 15, when these four stations will open every day until September 15.
In the months of July and August, the 16 lifeguard and rescue stations on the beaches of Mazarrón will open with two different schedules. On the following beaches:
Playa de las Moreras (Dog beach)
Lifeguard facilities will be available from 11.30 am to 7.30 pm.
On the following beaches:
La Playa del Rihuete (post and watchtower)
Playa de Bolnuevo which includes three stations (camping area, main beach and oasis area)
Lifeguard facilities will be available from 10.30 am to 8.30 pm.
Equipment and services
The equipment and facilities available during July and August include four rescue boats, a rescue motorcycle, fifteen rescue kayaks, two coordination vehicles with two coordinators accompanied by a nurse and an aquatic lifeguard, a Cecopal (Municipal emergency response plan) operator, five skippers and thirty-nine aquatic lifeguards, these are available daily to watch over and safeguard the lives of bathers on the municipality’s beaches and bathing areas.
Also during the months of July and August, adapted bathing areas for bathers with disabilities will be opened on the Beaches of El Puerto, La Isla and La Pava, each with the corresponding schedule. All of them have bath chairs, walkers and beach crutches. Equipment reservations can be made on the municipal website https://visitamazarron.com/descubrenos/reservas/ or directly on the beach if available, use of the equipment is for one hour at a time.
In the summer season, outside beach hours, the Municipal Emergency Service through its staff and volunteers cover lifeguard services and rescue on beaches, as well as the rest of the year.
Warning Flags
It is important that swimmers and beach users should be aware of of the significance of the colours of the beach flags that fly at the Lifeguard and Rescue stations and also at delimitate beach areas:
Green Flag - Enjoy the swim - beach without risks.
Yellow Flag - Caution - beach with possible risks: return (rip) currents, strong waves on the shore that make it difficult for children and elderly people to enter and exit the water, dangerous off shore winds where inflatable toys and equipments that can be dragged out to sea, machinery working on the beach or boats working in the bathing area, large influx of jellyfish, etc. Always ask the lifeguard for information.
Red Flag - BATHING OR STAYING ON THE BEACH, OR BOTH, IS PROHIBITED. The circumstances of the sea or the sand are dangerous to human life. Any red flag that flies on a beach, either at the post, which means that THE ENTIRE BEACH IS CLOSED TO BATHING AND/OR SAND, OR WHEN A SECTOR OR PART OF THE BEACH IS CLOSED, WITH RED FLAGS POSTED AT THE BEACH. A Red Fag signifies that the Mayor as the highest authority of the municipality has CLOSED THIS PUBLIC SPACE and prohibited its USE, the Policia Local, Guardia Civil and Protección Civil, are responsible and as agents of the authority, can order the evacuation of the public space be it the arena or the bathing area and issue or impose sanctions on the offenders. The red flags that have been displayed for reasons of contamination in the waters or the sand, can only be removed by the Minister of Health of the Regional Government of Murcia, after analysis of the water or sand, pathogens or contaminants proves negative.
Since 2023 Mazarrón has been using Green, Yellow and Red Flags with symbols for colourblind people, on the flags of lifeguard and rescue stations.
Mazarrón Council ask that you follow the signs and advice given by the lifeguard and rescue teams on the beaches or from the Municipal Protección Civil and SEM (Municipal Emergency Service) when they provide advice, they only want you to enjoy the beaches in a safe and healthy way.
