Malaga counts down to the big Christmas light switch-on
The Costa del Sol capital will shine with thousands of lights, festive arches and angels on high
Malaga’s Christmas lights will be switched on at 6.30pm on Friday November 28, marking the start of a season of festive wonder in the city centre. This year, Calle Larios will be transformed with stars depicting Nativity scenes in a new display called "Nativity of Light" by Iluminaciones Ximénez, replacing the celestial angels that have adorned the arches for the past three years.
The installation will keep the familiar structure of luminous columns that support the arches, featuring sixteen stars, thirty-two side columns and thirty-two luminous medallions.
These points of light, along with others across the historic centre, will use Ecogreenlux technology, reducing light pollution by 93% and cutting energy use by up to 60%. The total investment in Christmas lighting remains at €1.5 million, illuminating 2.7 million points across the Costa del Sol’s unofficial capital.
The musical selection for the traditional light show, which blends Christmas carols with popular songs and festive tunes, is still under wraps, as is the identity of the person who will press the button to start the display, a role last year held by the singer Diana Navarro.
The shows will run daily until January 5, with the exception of December 24 and 31, and will be shown at 6.30pm, 8.30pm and 10pm.
This year, Calle San Juan will feature three themed areas: 'Baroque Dream' with nine suspended crystal chandeliers, 'Victorian Nostalgia' with fifteen hand-decorated Victorian-style lamps and garlands and 'Whisper of Winter' with 100 metres of luminous garlands and lamps dressed in moss and lace, giving the street an artisanal and magical feel.The south façade of the Cathedral’s Tower will host a new video mapping show called 'The Fisherman of Dreams', inspired by the traditional trade of the cenacheros. The eight to nine minute show combines 2D and 3D projections, laser technology and a spectacular sound and lighting setup, including smoke machines and robotic lighting heads.
Screenings will take place at 7pm, 8.30pm and 10pm from Saturday November 29 until January 4, except on December 24 and 31.
Meanwhile, the City Hall façade will display continuous projections of stars, Christmas balls and traditional festive motifs, also launching on November 29 with the same schedule.
