This town has one of the most magical Christmas displays in Spain

The small town is trying to outshine the larger cities in the south of Spain with its superb Christmas decorations

Christmas is a magical time of year that brings together the whole family and lights up the winter streets throughout Spain. Certain decorative displays are colossal in size and scope, such as those in Madrid, Vigo or Barcelona, but in other parts of the country these special dates are also celebrated in a very heartfelt way.

Puente Genil is one such place. The municipality, which is found in the province of Córdoba, was the first in Spain to turn on its magnificent Christmas lights this year. The Christmas lights were turned on from November 14, and since then almost two million LED lights have illuminated the main streets of the town.

The Christmas lights display includes 281 arches, 105 street lamps, eight grouped motifs and 840 garlands, and the townspeople love the effort that goes into the display each year. This year the decorations have been inspired by a 'heavenly forest', with tree trunks in the shape of arches 12 metres high. Another notable decoration in the town is the wavy illuminated ceiling on the Avienda Manuel Reina, which creates the most wonderful effect upon viewing.

In addition to the lights, throughout the month of December there are numerous activities in Puente Genil that perfectly complement the Christmas decorations, such as flamenco shows to concerts, as well as delicious gastronomic offerings.
