Two men arrested over electrocution death of toddler at Murcia fairground
The Guardia Civil have detained suspects as the investigation into the tragic Alquerías accident continues
Two men have been arrested by the Guardia Civil following the death of a 2-year-old girl who suffered a fatal electric shock on a fairground ride in the Murcia district of Alquerías. The arrests were made as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday June 15.
The tragic event unfolded just after midnight. Emergency services received a call at 12.01am reporting that a young girl was unconscious and bleeding from the nose after an apparent electric shock. Paramedics arrived quickly and spent over an hour performing CPR, but were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead at 1.16am.
Neighbours described the scene as “horrifying”. One resident said the child was foaming at the mouth and bleeding from the nose.
In addition to the toddler, three other children were affected by the incident: an 8 year old girl and two boys aged 11 and 12, all showing symptoms consistent with electrocution. They were taken to hospital by their families for treatment. The girl’s mother, a 29-year-old woman, was treated for an anxiety attack at the scene.
The two men arrested have been brought before a court and face charges of homicide due to gross negligence, along with four counts of bodily harm. The Guardia Civil’s Organic Judicial Police Unit identified and located the individuals as part of their efforts to determine what caused the deadly accident.
The investigation remains open as the Guardia Civil works to determine the cause of the accident.
